Professor WU Jingshen is the Vice President for Teaching and Learning of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)), overseeing policy directions and procedures for the University’s teaching and learning including quality assurance, innovation in teaching pedagogy, and academic integrity and creativity. He is also a professor of the Smart Manufacturing Thrust Area under the Systems Hub.
Prior to joining HKUST(GZ), Prof. Wu was the Founding Dean and the Chair Professor of the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing (SDIM) at the Southern University of Science & Technology (2019–2020). Before that, he was a long-time faculty member at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of HKUST from 1996 through 2018, serving as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. In 2012, he was recognized as a leading international expert in scientific research, innovation, and entrepreneurship under the national “Overseas High-Level Talent Programs”.
As early as 2007, Prof. Wu was appointed as the Associate Dean of the Fok Ying Tung Research Institute of HKUST and founded the Centre for Engineering Materials and Reliability (CEMAR) in Nansha, Guangzhou. In 2012, he founded XJTU-HKUST Joint School of Sustainable Development (JSSD) and served as the Founding Dean between 2014 and 2016. Under his leadership, JSSD was recognized as one of the demonstration colleges of internationalized institution by the Chinese State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. In 2017, he founded Division of Integrative Systems and Design (ISD) of HKUST and served as Acting Head until 2018.
Prof. Wu graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1983, and a PhD degree from the University of Sydney in 1994.
From 1983 to 1985, Prof. Wu worked at the Department of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a junior staff of the working group for the establishment of National Natural Science Foundation of China. From 1985 to 1987, he taught at the College of Chemical Engineering of the Xi'an Jiaotong University. From 1987 to 1990, he broadened his horizons at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), researching into the mechanical properties and reliability of carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites in aircraft application. From 1994 to 1996, Prof. Wu was awarded a prominent Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from the Australian Research Council (ARC) to develop high-strength and high-toughness nanocomposites. His research outcomes are highly cited by researchers in the field and received widespread media coverage in Australia. He is a senior consultant/advisor of NXP, Huawei, Kingfa, and Sinopec and a guest professor at several universities.
